Topic Recycling 1A: Global Warming

In my IELTS Topic Lesson 1 I told you more about two environmental problems: Global Warming and Water Scarcity

In this post you will:

  • learn the vocabulary about Global Warming that has been used

  • go to a link which will show you how to use this vocabulary in sentences

  • do a reading comprehension quiz on Global Warming

This is a list of vocabulary that you might find difficult.

alternative: something that you can choose instead of something else

alternative fuels: fuels other than petrol or diesel for powering motor vehicles, such as natural gas, methanol, or electricity

atmosphere: the air around the Earth

awareness: knowledge or understanding of a subject, issue, or situation

carbon dioxide: a gas without colour or smell, produced when you breathe out or when substances containing carbon are burnt

carpool: agree to travel together to work, college etc so that only one car is used each time

climate change: the changes that are thought to be affecting the world’s weather so that it is becoming warmer

drought: a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die

ecosystem: all the plants and animals in a particular area, considered as a system with parts that depend on one another

exhaust fumes: harmful gases produced by cars

extinct: describing an animal, plant, or language no longer exists

fossil fuel: a fuel such as coal or oil, made from decayed material from animals or plants that lived many thousands of years ago

gas concentration: the amount of a particular gas that is present in the air

gas emission: the amount of gas which is sent into the air

global warming: the slow increase in the temperature of the Earth caused by the greenhouse effect

global: including or affecting the whole world

greenhouse effect : the process in which heat is unable to escape from the atmosphere and causes the temperature of the Earth to rise

greenhouse gas: a gas that stops heat from escaping from the atmosphere and causes the greenhouse effect

reduce, reuse, recycle: the core principles of being environmentally responsible

renewable energy: renewable energy produced by natural materials that replace themselves by natural processes, so that they are never completely used up

solar power: the power coming from the Sun

water shortage: lack of water

wildfire: a fire that starts in an area of countryside and spreads very quickly
